What does the fact tell us that Meng Wanzhou was tailed after in Hong Kong by American spies?

Although the incident involving Huawei's Meng Wanzhou was already solved, it has left quite a few mysteries. An American media outlet published a lengthy article days ago to bring to light the shamelessness of the U.S. government in racking its brains to suppress Huawei, the madness of U.S. special agents in illegally tailing after and clandestinely taking photos of [Meng Wanzhou], and the recklessness and unscrupulousness of U.S. politicians. This is a lively lesson in national security education and also a lesson in rule of law education. This serves as the best footnote for the ongoing Hong Kong Legal Week and evidence that we must keep improving our legal system to safeguard national security.

Let's talk first about why Huawei is targeted by Washington. The Wall Street Journal report pointed out that as Huawei's 5G technology was unrivaled in the world, the U.S. intelligence authorities estimated that the Chinese company would grab 80 per cent of the global 5G equipment market. Unable to bear it, the U.S. then resorted to wicked trickery with an attempt to force Huawei out of the market by catching and detaining Meng Wanzhou, a senior Huawei executive. Despite in the end Washington was unable to bring Huawei to its knees , it has achieved its goal of forcing its allies to obey its orders by coercing some European countries that had signed business contracts with Huawei to unilaterally annul the contracts.

Next let's talk about U.S. special agents' illegal activities in Hong Kong. The U.S. has a finger in every pie when its espionage activities are concerned. It had gathered some of Huawei's confidential information long time ago, and set a trap accordingly. By August 2019, Washington was ready to prosecute Huawei and Meng Wanzhou, yet it had kept it a secret waiting for Meng to presented herself in one of the countries where "they can take actions", namely countries that were willing to cooperate with Uncle Sam's long-arm jurisdiction. When Meng walked into Hong Kong International Airport, American special agents continued to tail after and clandestinely take photos of her. In this way they sent information about Meng, such as her outfit, hair and makeup, through secret channels to John R. Bolton, then U.S. National Security Advisor who was the chief plotter for this operation. So right when Meng's airplane touched down in Vancouver, the Canadian police received the photos taken clandestinely and relevant descriptions from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The U.S. side also asked the Canadian police to confiscate the electronic devices carried by Meng and keep them as so-called evidence.

What was more shocking was that on the same day when Meng Wanzhou was arrested, a China-U.S. summit was held with Bolton sitting beside [then U.S. President] Donald Trump. A game of great powers is extraordinarily treacherous. Some people may have a good impression about the United States and do not believe that Uncle Sam is so mean and low-down. But this report is from the American press, which makes it even more irony. As a matter of fact, years ago, the U.S. also did this to Alstom, a French company. A book, The American Trap, thoroughly describes the whole incident, which is shockingly similar to the one involving Meng Wanzhou.

Details of Meng Wanzhou's stay in Hong Kong were well known to U.S. spies, which is shocking yet not surprising. While going into exile in Hong Kong, Edward Snowden, then a whistleblowing U.S. spy, once straightforwardly pointed out that a CIA station was set up in the U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong & Macau to engage in clandestine activities and collect information about China. Hong Kong people are no strangers to U.S. espionage activities. The U.S. is the chief "black hand" behind disturbances in Hong Kong since the city returned to the Motherland. Clandestine meetings of U.S. Consulate General officials with anti-China and trouble-making activists have been exposed once and again. The Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Turmoil starting in 2019 was a colour revolution supported by the U.S. behind the scene. Jimmy Lai Chee-ying of the Next Media shouted loudly about "fighting for the U.S.", which also exposed the tip of the iceberg of collusion between internal and external forces.

The Meng Wanzhou incident has taught Hong Kong people a valuable lesion, which tears to pieces America's beautiful cloak of respecting human rights and the rule of law and shows how the United States, which once and again accuses others of "engaging in espionage activities", plays the trick of a robber acting like a cop. China's fast development makes the U.S. envious, jealous and aversive, and it becomes so anxious that it resorts to every conceivable means to curb China.

In the past when China-U.S conflict was not so fierce, Hong Kong could have had its bread buttered on both sides. So much so that some people still cherish illusions about the U.S. But times have changed. Being China's international financial hub, Hong Kong now is also striving to turn itself into an international innovation and technology centre. Because of this, Hong Kong becomes a thorn in Washington's flesh. U.S. interference in Hong Kong affairs and its spies' activities are bound to intensify. The Meng Wanzhou incident could happen to anyone. Hong Kong now is protected by the National Security Law, which however only covers four categories of criminal deeds such as treason. There is no legal stipulation to deal with espionage. This loophole will be plugged only when legislation on Article 23 of the Basic Law is accomplished.
